The trade-off is that a plain red dot gives you no extra reach: what you see is what you get. A magnifier solves that without replacing your primary sight at all. It clips on behind it, adds 3× or 6× magnification when flipped into position, and flips out of the way in a second when you're back to close-range work.

A 6× magnifier gives real extended reach for engaging targets further out, but doubling the magnification also narrows the field of view and makes fast target acquisition at close range noticeably harder. Compatibility: Red Dots, Holographic Sights & Prism Scopes

Magnifiers are designed to pair with red dot and holographic sights — they have no reticle of their own, and work by magnifying the dot or reticle of whatever sight sits in front of them. They are not compatible with prism scopes, since a prism scope already carries fixed magnification and its own etched reticle — stacking a magnifier behind one doesn't add anything useful and isn't a supported use case.
