1× PRISM • ETCHED RETICLEClose-Quarters Prism Optic

Red-Dot Speed. Etched-Reticle Confidence.

The Vortex Spitfire™ AR is a true 1× prism scope built for fast close-range engagement, with a DRT (Dual Ring Tactical) reticle etched directly into the prism so the aiming reference remains visible even without battery power. Selectable red or green illumination, night-vision-compatible low settings and a lower 1/3 co-witness mount make it a purpose-built alternative to a conventional rifle red dot—particularly attractive to shooters who prefer the sight picture of a prism optic.

✓ BUY IF

  • You want fast 1× aiming but prefer an etched reticle over an LED-only dot.
  • You have astigmatism or simply find prism reticles easier to resolve.
  • You want a close-quarters optic that remains usable if the battery dies.
  • You value selectable red / green illumination and a built-in lower 1/3 co-witness mount.

• NOT IDEAL IF

  • You need true magnification for regular mid- or longer-range shooting.
  • You specifically want to run a Vortex Micro6x, Micro3X or VMX-3T magnifier—the official product information states prism scopes are not compatible with these magnifiers.
  • You want unlimited eye relief like a conventional red dot or holographic sight; the Spitfire AR has 3.8 in eye relief.

↗ CONSIDER

  • AMG® UH-1® Gen II if holographic technology, unlimited eye relief and professional CQB use are the priority.
  • Spitfire™ HD Gen II 3× if you want a compact etched prism with useful fixed magnification.
  • Spitfire™ HD Gen II 5× if greater reach and an integrated MRDS mounting platform are more important than 1× speed.
Product Overview

The Spitfire™ AR was designed around one very specific job: fast, precise shooting at close distances with the added security of an etched prism reticle. At 1× magnification it retains the speed expected from a close-quarters optic, while the DRT reticle remains visible even when illumination is switched off or the battery is exhausted.

Unlike a conventional LED red dot, the aiming pattern is physically etched into the prism. Vortex specifically notes that this design is preferred by shooters with astigmatism. The dual-ring geometry draws the eye toward the centre for rapid alignment, while selectable red or green illumination provides five intensity levels for changing conditions.

The optic uses a standard AAA battery, includes a lower 1/3 co-witness mount, offers two night-vision-compatible low settings and is waterproof, fogproof and shockproof for regular field and range use.

Why We Recommend It

The Spitfire AR makes sense when you want the handling speed of a 1× optic without relying entirely on an illuminated dot. The etched DRT reticle is its defining advantage: the sight picture is still present when the electronics are off, and shooters who struggle with blooming or starburst from conventional red dots may prefer the prism presentation.

Within the Vortex rifle-optic range, this is the model we would choose for someone who does not need magnification but specifically wants a prism. It is more specialised than a Triumph or Crossfire, less dependent on electronics than a standard red dot, and considerably more compact in concept than moving to a magnified riflescope.

Recommended Platform & Applications
AR / SLR Platforms
★★★★★
Primary fit with lower 1/3 co-witness mounting.
PCC / Compact Carbine
★★★★☆
Fast 1× sight picture for short-range work.
Recreational Shooting
★★★★★
Official Vortex recommended use.
Astigmatism-Friendly Choice
★★★★★
Prism design specifically noted by Vortex.

Best application: close-range rifle and carbine shooting where speed matters, but the shooter wants the permanence and definition of an etched reticle.

For a general-purpose rifle that may be pushed further downrange, consider the Spitfire HD Gen II 3×. For maximum CQB speed with unlimited eye relief and a premium holographic system, consider the AMG UH-1 Gen II.

Mounting & Compatibility
Mounting Footprint Integrated rifle-optic mounting system; official mount type: Lower 1/3 Co-Witness.
Included Mount / Hardware Lower 1/3 co-witness mount is the specified mount type. Also supplied with Torx® T-10 wrench, 5.56 BDC turret cap, AAA battery and flip caps.
Platform Compatibility Best suited to AR / SLR-style rifles, carbines and similar rail-equipped platforms where a lower 1/3 co-witness 1× optic is appropriate.
Magnifier Compatibility Not compatible with Vortex Micro6x, Micro3X or VMX-3T magnifiers according to the official Vortex product information.
Night-Vision Compatibility Yes. The lowest two illumination settings are night-vision compatible.

Important fitment note: The Spitfire AR is a prism scope, not a conventional red dot. Vortex explicitly states that its prism scopes are not compatible with the Micro6x, Micro3X or VMX-3T magnifiers. Check your rail space, preferred eye relief and co-witness setup before ordering.

Reticle & Sight Picture

DRT (MOA) — Dual Ring Tactical

The DRT reticle is engineered for rapid close-range shooting. Its dual-ring design naturally pulls the eye toward the centre of the sight picture, helping the shooter establish alignment quickly.

Because the reticle is etched directly onto the prism, the aiming pattern remains visible even without illumination. This is the core difference between the Spitfire AR and a conventional LED red dot. Illumination can be selected in bright red or bright green to suit the shooter and conditions.

Illumination: Bright Red / Bright Green
Reticle: DRT (MOA)
Illumination Levels: Five selectable intensity levels per Vortex reticle description; lowest two system settings are night-vision compatible.

Choosing the Right Configuration

The Spitfire AR is a single 1× prism configuration built around the DRT (MOA) etched reticle. The reticle can be illuminated in either red or green, so you do not need to choose a separate red-dot or green-dot SKU.

Choose this model when the priority is 1× speed plus an etched reticle. Move to the Spitfire HD Gen II 3× or 5× when fixed magnification is required, or to the AMG UH-1 Gen II when holographic performance and unlimited eye relief are the stronger priority.

For handgun use, select the footprint and role first: Defender-CCW for compact carry, Defender-ST for all-purpose duty use, Defender-XL for competition, or enclosed variants where emitter protection is the priority.

Where the Spitfire AR stands out: it is the only 1× prism in this group. Compared with a conventional red dot it gives up unlimited eye relief and magnifier flexibility, but gains an etched DRT reticle that remains usable without illumination. If that etched-reticle advantage is the reason you are shopping for a prism, this is the correct 1× choice.

How This Optic Fits the Vortex Range

Noctis Africa Verdict: The Spitfire™ AR sits in a very specific and useful position in the Vortex range. It is not simply another red dot: it is the 1× etched-prism alternative for shooters who want close-quarters speed with a permanent reticle.

Below it in complexity: Triumph, Crossfire and StrikeFire II are simpler LED red-dot solutions with unlimited eye relief. Above it in magnification: Spitfire HD Gen II 3× and 5× provide fixed magnification and the AR-BDC4 reticle. Premium CQB alternative: AMG UH-1 Gen II provides a holographic EBR-CQB reticle, unlimited eye relief and extensive night-vision capability.

For a shooter with astigmatism who wants a non-magnified rifle optic, the Spitfire AR is one of the clearest purpose-specific choices in the Vortex family.
